1987 Cadillac DeVille - A/C Module Failure under hood, by Wales 1 at Wales Garage Corp

July 16th, 2008

Blower module and compressor run throuh this  part AC Delco #15-72530 this part has an aditional update that must be done at the same time that it is replaced. The harness kit is  a PT 204  You will probaly have to order it special as most don’t stock it!  Delco catalog 15a-100-06  Page 203 Says use 2-way conector 12101932 and 4 way 12058322  Thats great but when you order them no instructions are given on how to and what wires to cut! or repair. So we have divised a fix for the compressor side with a relay.

Cut # 204 wire blue and install relay contact #30 #87 30 to compressor 87 to good ground. 86 from module 85 to AC fuse  Use a any bosch type relay with a good harness. We cut them off the scrap cars and this fixes the problem.

2007 Lincoln MKZ - 3.5L Lincoln MKZ Power Steering Belt Removal And Installation, by DCCOLLISION at D & C Collision and Service, Inc.

July 16th, 2008

The 3.5L in the Lincoln MKZ has differant accessory drive set-up than the 3.0L in the Ford and Mecury. The power steeing belt is separate and has no tensioner or adjustment. To remove the belt use specail tool 303-1252/1. This is a wedged shaped tool that fits between the belt and power steering pully. Rotate the crank shaft and the belt pops off. Similar to mounting or dismaunting a tire on a rim. Use tool 303-1252/2 to install belt using same method.

I Did not have access to these tool but found a broad flat head screw driver held by an assistant while I rotated the crank shaft worked just fine.

1994 Ford Econoline E350 - PSOM, by Kevin Gauthier at Transmission Gauthier

July 16th, 2008

at the rabs test connector (close to left battery with g\b and r\p wires) you should have around 667 hertz with your scope at 48km per hour. If you want to check in ohms, you need do unplug the rabs module located behind the right side of dash on passengers side because if you dont the module will give you bad feedback and your dvom will only flash. you should have around 1700 to 1900 ohms! if not go directly to your sensor on differential. if ohms are in specs there suspect faulty wiring!

1999 Cadillac Seville STS - High Battery Voltage, by imajeenyas at Glovers 66

July 16th, 2008

My customer came into the shop after his car was diagnosed by the local Cadillac dealership as needing a new PCM and alternator. (A $2000.00 quote on the repair!) The customer complaint was his cruise control, power windows and various other systems were non operational, as well as a “check charging system” message on the display. A quick check showed several high voltage DTC’s.  I checked battery voltage and my DVOM showed the alternator was charging 17+ volts!!  At this point the PCM shuts down systems such as cruise and windows to protect them. I followed the steps for diagnosing the codes and came up without an answer.  I decided to try the PCM and alternator as suggested by the dealership. After the agonizing alternator install, the new flashed PCM was installed also. The alternator was still charging 17+ volts. The wiring diagram shows a thermistor mounted on the battery which reads ambient temperature and varies resistance to the alternator which in turn varies the voltage output of the alternator. I couldn’t find any specs on what the Ohm rating of the thermistor should be.  (this one Ohm’d out at 6.9K) I unplugged it and the alternator starting charging at 13.8 volts but the battery light was on and “check charging system” message was displayed. A call to the dealership revealed the thermistor was discontinued with no replacement. I went to my local electronics store and purchased several resistors and through trial and error ended up using 1600 Ohms.  No battery light, no error message and no DTC’s!  The alternator was now charging 13.4 at idle and 14.5 above idle.  The resistance is no longer variable but the charging system now functions as it should.

2005 Ford Econoline E350 Super Duty - Van leads/Pulls, by Joerace at GARYS AUTO SERVICE

June 11th, 2008

Any radius arm front suspension system set up that tends to lead or pull regardless off what geometry you throw at it try this. Inspect the bushings on the radius arms if either is touching the frame try this one on for size. Using new bushings and a drive on hoist install the new bushings onto/into bracket and bolt bracket back onto frame do not tighten yet, have assistant pull radius arm as far down as possible and measure a rough distance from rubber part of bushing to frame. Fabricate a spacer to fill gap between rubber and frame, again get assistant to pull down on radius arm put you spacer into position and secure it with a few tack welds. Tighten the three bolts for bracket (no torque spec can be found) than release tension. Test drive and insure vehicle drives straight, realign if necessary, get customer back after a couple hundred kilometers and inspect spacer and bushing. Have done this on two vans for same person, the one van a 99, has gone 150 000 km with no more pulling issues while driving or braking. These vans both have a parts racks that sits on the left side of the van, heavy parts and tools, and both vans have been modified only on the left radius arms, the right sides do not bottom out on frame, however if majority of weight is on the right side than the right arm would need fixing. These vans can be a treat to try and keep going in a straight line this is something we have tried with success and really it takes only 30 minutes at most to fabricate and install this idea (minus replacement of bushings).

2004 Nissan Pathfinder LE - TPM RESET W/O CONSULT, by PAUL CMAT at HARRIS TIRE AND AUTO FIRESTONE

June 11th, 2008

Here is a good TIP. 04 Pathfinder. Anybody else have trouble reseting the TPM? Heres something they don’t tell you. If you don’t have a Nissan Consult (And who does?) try this. Behind the DLC there is a 2 spade connector with only a single wire in it. Set tire pressures to spec on door,KOEO ground this wire 5 times within 10 seconds. This will get the TPM light flashing. YOUR IN! Using a TPM tool register the tires (L/F,R/F,R/R,L/R,SPARE) light should go out. YEY! I ment YUP! I don’t know how many of these I have sent to Nissan. Not any more. I will let you know if it works on any others. I’m betting it does.PAUL.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300CE - Low, rough, erratic idle, ABS light on, And A/C inop, by Marv C. at TIRE KINGDOM 169

June 11th, 2008

Car came in with dead battery, Alt charging at 11 volts, running like ***** with a low idle. Replaced Alt with a reman bosch and batt. chargeing @ 12.5 volts still with low idle. Car ran great at 1000rpm. Cust didnt want to pay the drivability diag to check, so he picked up the car. Came back next day saying after repairs, ABS light was on and AC not working, Also stalling on stops.

Make a long story short, No power to Compressor, No power to IAC. Found a blown fuse on top of a relay behind the battery, replaced 10 amp fuse and get this. AC WORKED CAR DROVE AND IDLED GREAT AND THE FREAKIN ABS LIGHT TURNED OFF. Well I ordered the relay and they have an updated verson that has 2 fuses instead of one. This relay is called the Overvoltage protection relay. I guess even jumpstarting a car can blow the fuse.

So remember, the sure signs are *****py idle, No AC, low alt voltage And ABS light.

Hopefully this helps someone in the future……..Marv

2005 Toyota Camry LE - Upper Oil Pan (balance shaft housing), by TimGenz at JAY’S CAR REPAIR

June 11th, 2008

There is no procedure listed for replacement of the upper oil pan.

I had to replace upper oil pan on this 2.4L.

The customer had bottomed out on the street and the aluminum oil pan broke at the

area where the engine mount attaches to the oil pan.

Front of engine by the right axle.

To replace just the upper oil pan.

1) Remove Valve cover.

2) Remove Lower oil pan.

3) Remove Timing Cover.

4) Remove Oil Pump gear and chain, then oil pump.

5) Remove upper oil pan , 11 Bolts, one bolt is hidden in oil filter housing. See attached picture.

If you plan on replacing the rear main seal , you will need to remove engine from car.

Notes: There is an updated Balance shaft assembly.

The Balance shafts are driven by a  gear on the crankshaft.

The drive gear on the crankshaft has 50 teeth and the balance shafts have 25 teeth.

The Toyota dealership near us, estimates this repair at 22 hours including rear main seal.

To set up the balance shafts engine at T.D.C. #1 Compression. See Fig #169.and attached pictures.

1996 Toyota Corolla - Cooling Fan Keeps Running, by Tipaskan Service at TIPASKAN SERVICE LTD

June 11th, 2008

We had a 1996 Toyota Corolla, non A/C, come in with a seized cooling fan, changed it but it wouldn’t stop running. Tried a cooling fan relay, switch, didn’t work. There is a shunt or ground pin on the passenger side A/C High Pressure Switch plug to bypass the A/C, if that shunt or ground pin comes off the cooling/radiator fan will keep on running. The wires are green and light green/black.
